Current Research
Mucus secretion and water transport by airway epithelium is a very important process. Pathophysiological changes in secretions occur in diseases such as asthma and cystic fibrosis. One focus of my laboratory is to understand the mechanisms of water and mucus secretions from airway submucousal gland cells. The secretagogue-induced increases in both mucus release and water secretion are being explored using electrophysiological (Ussing and Patch clamp), cell biological (single cell calcium imaging) and various biochemical and molecular biological techniques to understand the relationship between ion/water secretion and mucus release in isolated gland cells grown in tissue culture. In addition, cellular processes that lead to sensitization of these responses to acetylcholine and histamine are being studied as one possible mechanism for development of hypersecretion as observed in asthma and other disease states.
